Inquiry Question:

How can I assure that all students are able to maintain engagement and connection to what is being taught in class?

Goal:

Students with a variety of learning styles, backgrounds, and ability will be engaged in what is being taught in class.

Related TQS:

#1: A teacher establishes, promotes and sustains inclusive learning environments where diversity is embrace and every student is welcomed, cared for, respected and safe.

Strategies to attain goal:

  • Use a variety of teaching methods

- Visual

- Hands-on

- Social

- Independent

- Technology

  • Relate lessons to interest that are relevant to the students

  • Differentiate and accommodate the needs of learners at different levels of ability

  • Maintain a positive and upbeat attitude towards the learning and content

Evidence of Success:

  • Students express verbal desire to complete assignments

  • Students requested to continue working on assignments in their own time

  • Students voiced their enjoyment of the lesson: “this is fun”

  • Students showed a very high level of participation in class

  • Students told me they found my lessons fun

  • Students were given assignments that allow them to be creative, express their interests and things that provoke curiosity

  • During phonics, students requested to read their work aloud (in song form too!)

  • Students hoped that I would take a photo of their work (poems and Lego creations)

Inquiry Question #1: 

To what extend does a close personal connection with students enhance an individual's learning experience?

Goal #1:

I will create personal connections with each student in class to ensure they feel seen and understood.

#1: A teacher builds positive and productive relationships with students, parent/guardians, peers and others in the school and local community to support student learning

Strategies to attain goal:​

  • Learn every student's name as soon as possible​

  • Remember student interests/events in their life

  • Engage in casual conversions to build rapport during down time

Evidence of Success:

  • Students who I know the names of usually also know my name/ have less trouble addressing me correctly​

  • Students appear excited when I bring up their personal interests or events/ they appear to appreciate being seen

  • Students seek me out during lunch hour to show me things about their lives/interests

Inquiry Question #2:

To what extent do hands-on activities engage students in learning?

Goal #2:

​Include a lab or hands-on activity each week to ensure student engagement.

#4: A teacher establishes, promotes and sustains inclusive learning environments where diversity is embraced and every student is welcomed, cared for, respected and safe.

Strategies to attain goal:​

  • Plan labs for each technical skill

  • Use demonstrations to increase interest towards different concepts

  • Use technology to supplement activities that are not possible in a classroom environment

  • Students ask me prior to class if we are doing something fun, often with the expectation that I will say yes​

  • Students get loud and excited during demos, indicating high engagement

  • Most students participate actively in all activities and show less focus during note taking or assessments

  • Treat all students fairly and with the same respect I expect from them

  • Adapting notes booklets, quizzes, and tests into more succinct wording

  • Gaining close relationships with ELL students to ensure they feel comfortable voicing their needs with me
